Shaft

Shaft was the first Hollywood film that was directed and starred a black man as the main character. It starts with an establishing shot, showing us that the film is set in New York. The sound starts of as the natural surroundings and then a song about shaft begins as we see him walking through the city. The camera tracks him and follows where he walks. Seeing him walk through the street, walking straight across roads and ignoring cars in his way shows us that he is a confident man who has no fear. We see he is a detective when he flashes his badge to a jewellery seller on the street. We see that he is a very powerful character.
